When the glass heats up or cools down or when driving over a pothole, a small stone chip damage may quickly become a larger crack. In that case, a complete replacement of the windshield can no longer be avoided. However, if a small stone chip damage is repaired as fast as possible and professionally, nothing else can stand in the way of driving on safely.

A windshield repair is usually completely free of cost in partial- and full-coverage insurance. The insurance company covers not just the bill. Even the deductible is not required to be paid by the vehicle owner. The tariff does not increase due to the damages. If a windshield replacement is necessary, car owners having partial- and full-coverage insurance pay, at the most, the amount agreed upon with the insurance as deductible as their cost share.

Replacement or repair?

For the repair of a glass damage to the car both legal requirements and technical limits must be observed: Generally, damaged rear and side windows must be replaced completely with new ones. In the case of damage on the windshield, it depends on the size and the location of the damaged portion: In principle, a repair is possible if the stone chip diameter does not exceed the size of a 2 Euro coin and the distance to the edge of the windshield glass is at least 10 inches. In no case should the damage be in the field of vision of the driver.
